ES week 2021

Special industry session: Model-Driven System-Performance Engineering for Cyber-Physical Systems

System performance often brings the competitive advantage for high-tech cyber-physical systems like semiconductor equipment, analytical instruments, and medical equipment. System-Performance Engineering (SysPE) encompasses modeling formalisms, methods, techniques, and industrial practices to design systems for performance, where performance is taken integrally into account during the whole system life cycle. Due to the rapidly increasing complexity of systems, there is a need to develop and establish model-driven SysPE methods and techniques.

We had a nice session where we presented an overview of the field of System-Performance Engineering, as well as our vision for its future. The recording is available via youtube. The paper is freely available from the ACM digital library.

I am professor of computational models in the Electrical Engineering department of the Eindhoven University of Technology (TU/e) in the Electronic Systems (ES) group. I am also a senior research fellow at TNO-ESI.

Before I started in the Electrical Engineering department in 1999, I was working at the Computing Science department in the Formal Methods and Information Systems groups at the TU/e. In 2000/2001, I spent some time as a visiting researcher at Philips Research Eindhoven, Information Processing Architectures Group. As a Master's student, I spent one year at the Computer Science Department of the University of Waterloo, Ontario, Canada. Early 2006, I spent three months of sabbatical leave at the Electrical and Computer Engineering (ECE) Department at Carnegie Mellon University (CMU), Pittsburgh, PA, USA, in the System-Level Design group.

My current research area is the design of embedded and cyber-physical systems with a focus on networked and multiprocessor systems, trade-off analysis, design-space exploration and computational models. To obtain reliable systems, their design should be model-driven and based on rigorous mathematical foundations. More about my research can be found on the Epicurus page. Topics I worked on in the past are workflow management, formal methods in system design, and distributed debugging.
